Seven days is enough to understand Crete — not to exhaust it, but to feel the difference between its regions: the urban energy of Heraklion, the Venetian elegance of Chania, the mountain villages where time runs at a different pace, and the sea that changes colour every hour of the day. This itinerary is built for private travel. Every day is flexible, every route can be adjusted, and every recommendation comes from local knowledge.

Day 1: Heraklion — Knossos and the Archaeological Museum
Arrive in Heraklion and go directly to Knossos Palace. Go early — before 9am if possible — before the tour groups arrive. Knossos is the largest Bronze Age archaeological site in Crete, the ceremonial centre of the Minoan civilisation that flourished here between 2700 and 1450 BC. A knowledgeable private guide transforms the site from a field of reconstructed walls into a living story of the civilisation that, by some accounts, invented Europe.
Afternoon: the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, which holds the finest collection of Minoan artefacts anywhere in the world — including the famous snake goddesses, the Phaistos Disc (still undeciphered), and the spectacular frescoes from Knossos. Allow 2–3 hours. Evening: dinner in the narrow streets of the old town around 1866 Street market.
Day 2: Phaistos, Matala, and the Messara Plain
Drive south through the Messara Plain — Crete’s most fertile valley, backed by the Asterousia Mountains — to Phaistos, the second-largest Minoan palace. Less reconstructed than Knossos and correspondingly more atmospheric. Lunch at a village taverna in the Messara. Afternoon: the red rock caves of Matala Beach, where hippies famously lived in the 1960s and 70s. The beach itself is beautiful.
Day 3: Central Mountains — Rethymno and Arkadi
Drive west along the north coast to Rethymno: the most intact Venetian old town in Crete. Morning in the old town — Fortezza, Rimondi Fountain, the harbour. Afternoon: drive 25 km inland to Arkadi Monastery, the most emotionally significant site in modern Cretan history. The return to Rethymno through the mountain villages takes you through landscapes that feel unchanged for centuries. Overnight in Rethymno old town if possible.
| Day | Region | Highlights | Drive Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Heraklion | Knossos, Archaeological Museum | Arrival day |
| 2 | South Crete | Phaistos, Matala, Messara Plain | 45 min from Heraklion |
| 3 | Rethymno | Old Town, Fortezza, Arkadi Monastery | 1.5 hrs from Heraklion |
| 4 | Chania | Old Harbour, Venetian streets, cooking class | 1 hr from Rethymno |
| 5 | Western Crete | Balos Lagoon / Samaria Gorge / Elafonisi | 1–2 hrs from Chania |
| 6 | Aegean Sea | Private yacht charter | Depart from Chania harbour |
| 7 | Eastern Crete | Spinalonga, Elounda, return to Heraklion | 2.5 hrs from Chania |
Day 4: Chania — Old Town, Food Market, and Cooking Class
Chania is the most beautiful city in Crete. The Venetian harbour with its lighthouse, the covered market on Skrydlof Street, the tangle of alleys behind the waterfront — all of it deserves more time than most visitors give. Morning: the food market and old town on foot. Afternoon: private Cretan cooking class in a village house outside the city — learn dakos, spanakopita, and loukoumades, then eat what you made. Evening: harbour dinner.
Day 5: Western Crete — Choose Your Adventure
Three options, each exceptional. Choose based on your energy and interests:
- Balos Lagoon by private yacht: Sail from Chania harbour to the turquoise lagoon before the ferries arrive. Best for scenery and photography.
- Samaria Gorge hike: 16 km through Europe’s longest gorge, emerging at the Libyan Sea. Best for active travellers.
- Elafonisi Beach and Topolia Gorge: Pink sand beach plus a dramatic mountain drive through the village of Topolia and its gorge chapel. Best for families.
Day 6: Private Yacht Charter
A full day at sea from Chania or Rethymno. Your skipper plots a route based on wind conditions and your preferences — typically including Stavros Bay (the Zorba the Greek beach), the sea caves near Cape Drapanos, and a long lunch anchor in a secluded cove. Swim, snorkel, and do nothing at all. This is the day that guests consistently say they wish they had booked for day one.
Day 7: Eastern Crete — Spinalonga and Elounda
Drive east along the coast to Elounda Bay — the most exclusive resort area in Crete, home to several of Greece’s finest hotels and a handful of outstanding fish restaurants. Take the short boat to Spinalonga Island, the former leper colony whose story Victoria Hislop immortalised in The Island. A private guided tour here takes 1.5–2 hours and covers Venetian, Ottoman, and 20th-century history simultaneously. Return to Heraklion airport via the coast road.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 7 days enough for Crete?
Seven days is enough to cover the main regions and have several genuine experiences. It is not enough to exhaust Crete — the island rewards return visits. If you have 10 days or more, add the Lassithi Plateau, the Sfakia coast, and more time in each location to let it settle.
What is the best base for a 7-day Crete trip?
For flexibility, split the week: 2 nights in Heraklion, 2 in Rethymno or a village between the cities, and 3 in Chania. This avoids long daily drives and puts you within easy reach of everything in the itinerary. Alternatively, a single villa base near Chania with private drivers for excursions.
When is the best time to do this itinerary?
May–June and September–October. The weather is warm, the sites are open, the sea is swimmable, and the island hasn’t reached peak-summer density. Samaria Gorge opens in May and closes in November depending on conditions.
