Crete is one of the best family holiday destinations in the Mediterranean. The combination of warm, shallow seas, fascinating history, and a culture that genuinely welcomes children makes it an excellent choice for families with children of all ages. Here’s what works best — and some honest advice on what to watch out for.
Best Beaches for Families with Children
Falassarna
Wide, sandy, gently shelving into the sea — Falassarna on the northwest coast is ideal for younger children who need a safe paddling zone. The beach is large enough that families can spread out comfortably, and there are tavernas with good family food directly on the beach.
Elafonisi
The shallow pink-sand lagoon at Elafonisi is perfect for small children. In places the water is only ankle-deep for 50+ metres, forming a natural paddling pool. The pink-tinged sand delights children of all ages. Go early to avoid the worst of the summer crowds.
Rethymno Town Beach
Right next to the old town, Rethymno’s town beach is a long, gently shelving sandy shore ideal for families staying in the city. The water is calm (sheltered from the north), the beach is staffed with lifeguards, and there are water sports available for older children. Good tavernas with kids’ menus right on the beach.
Malia Beach
The long, sheltered bay near Malia (despite the town’s party reputation) is one of the best family beaches in Crete — wide, sandy, with very gradual depth increase. Perfect for small children and confident young swimmers alike.
Activities Children Love in Crete
Knossos Palace
Children who have even a passing interest in history find Knossos genuinely captivating. The maze-like structure, the story of the Minotaur (associated with the site), the vivid fresco reconstructions, and the sheer scale of it make for a memorable visit. For younger children, frame it as a real labyrinth — you’ll have their full attention.
Hire a guide: a good guide will engage children directly with stories and questions, transforming the visit from a history lesson into an adventure.
The Heraklion Archaeological Museum
The Bull-Leaper fresco, the Snake Goddess figurines, the mysterious Phaistos Disc — the Minoan collection is surprisingly engaging for children. The museum is well lit, not overcrowded (by Greek museum standards), and the objects are genuinely dramatic. The companion booklet for children available at reception is excellent.
Aquaworld Aquarium, near Hersonissos
A small but excellent reptile and aquarium park near Hersonissos, with sea turtles, snakes, lizards, and Mediterranean fish. Very hands-on — children can handle some animals with supervision. Ideal for a morning visit.
Lychnostatis Open-Air Museum, Hersonissos
A traditional Cretan village recreated in an outdoor museum — with a windmill, a church, a watermill, traditional crafts demonstrations, and a small botanical garden of Cretan plants. A gentle introduction to traditional Cretan life that works well for children aged 7+.
Water Parks
Two large water parks are popular with families in peak season:
- Watercity (between Heraklion and Hersonissos) — one of the largest in Europe, with rides for all ages.
- Limnoupolis (near Chania) — a more relaxed, nature-themed park with good facilities for younger children.
Creta Aquarium (ARGO), near Heraklion
The largest aquarium in the eastern Mediterranean, operated by the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research. Excellent displays of Mediterranean marine life. Particularly engaging for children who’ve been swimming in the sea and want to know what’s living there.
Family-Friendly Day Trips
Spinalonga Boat Trip
Take the boat from Elounda to the fortified island of Spinalonga — the journey is exciting for children (short boat ride on a beautiful sea) and the island itself is dramatic without being too demanding to walk around.
Samaria Gorge (for older children)
Children aged 10+ who are reasonably fit can complete the Samaria Gorge hike. It’s a long day but deeply satisfying — the gorge is dramatic, the Iron Gates genuinely awe-inspiring, and the swim at Agia Roumeli at the end is a perfect reward. Not suitable for younger children or in high summer heat.
Practical Tips for Families
- Renting a car is strongly recommended — it gives you flexibility to find shade and calm beaches, stop for snacks without planning ahead, and adjust timing to children’s energy levels.
- Schedule beach time in the morning and cultural sites in late afternoon when it’s cooler — not the other way around.
- Cretan culture loves children — you will be welcomed warmly in restaurants, shops, and villages. Children staying up late at taverna dinners is completely normal and accepted.
- Sun safety is critical — the Cretan summer sun is intense. Factor 50 sunscreen, reapplied frequently, rashguards for young children, and regular shade breaks are essential.
- Mosquitoes can be a problem at inland and low-lying locations in summer, especially at dusk. Bring repellent.
