Elounda is a small town on the eastern coast of Crete, 12 km north of Agios Nikolaos, at the southern edge of the Mirabello Bay. It is best known internationally for the concentration of ultra-luxury hotels on the Elounda peninsula and the surrounding islands — Spinalonga Island, the most visited archaeological site in Crete, is a short boat ride away. But Elounda is more than its hotels: the town itself, the bay, the archaeology, and the scenery of the Mirabello Bay constitute one of the most beautiful corners of the eastern Mediterranean.

The Mirabello Bay
Mirabello Bay is one of the largest bays in the Mediterranean — 30 km deep from the Elounda peninsula in the north to Agios Nikolaos in the south. The name is Venetian: mira bello, beautiful view. The bay is extraordinarily clear — visibility underwater can exceed 20 metres — because the deep water circulates efficiently and the coastline is relatively free of development-driven runoff. The ancient ruins of Olous, a Minoan and later Dorian city, lie partially submerged at the Elounda causeway, visible from above in calm conditions.
The Luxury Hotels of Elounda
The Elounda peninsula has the highest concentration of five-star and ultra-luxury hotels in Greece. The key properties:
Elounda Beach Hotel: The original luxury hotel of the peninsula (opened 1972), consistently ranked among the top 100 hotels in the world. Bungalows with private pools along the waterfront, multiple restaurants, a marina for private boats. The standard of service is demonstrably high.
Elounda Gulf Villas: Private villas and suites on the hill above the bay, with unobstructed views across the Mirabello to Spinalonga. Infinity pools. The most private option on the peninsula.
Blue Palace Resort: Large property with villa suites and bungalows spread along a private cove. The water access is excellent; each villa category has direct sea access or a private pool.
Domes of Elounda: Adults-only retreat with an overwater villa section (the only overwater suites in the Mediterranean), striking contemporary architecture, and direct access to the best snorkelling on the peninsula.
What these properties share: the Mirabello Bay location, the clarity of the water, the view to Spinalonga, and the relative isolation from the mass-tourism infrastructure that affects western Crete's resort areas. Elounda is not a party destination. It is the closest thing in Crete to a quiet luxury escape.
The Ruins of Olous
Olous was a Minoan city that later became a significant Dorian Greek and Roman settlement. A substantial part of the city — streets, buildings, a basilica — is submerged in the shallow water of the Elounda lagoon, visible through the clear water from the causeway. The causeway connecting the Elounda peninsula to the mainland was built over the ancient city in the early 20th century. Walking it, you can see the ruins directly below you in the water. The snorkelling around the causeway is excellent: ancient stones, sea urchins, octopus, and small reef fish in water that rarely exceeds 3 metres depth at the causeway edge.
Spinalonga Island from Elounda
Spinalonga is the Venetian fortress island 10 minutes by boat from Elounda harbour. The fortress (built 1579) was the last Venetian stronghold in the Ottoman-controlled eastern Mediterranean, holding out until 1715. After Venice, it served as a leper colony from 1903 to 1957 — the last functioning leper colony in Europe. The Cretan writer Victoria Hislop set her novel The Island (2005) on Spinalonga; the BBC adaptation brought the island to a much wider audience.
From Elounda, boats run every 30 minutes in summer (09:00–18:00). The crossing is 10 minutes. A cheaper and less crowded alternative: take the ferry from Plaka village, 4 km north of Elounda (5-minute crossing, fewer tourists). Full Spinalonga Island guide here.
What to Eat in Elounda
The harbour restaurants in Elounda town serve reliable fish taverna food at higher prices than elsewhere in eastern Crete — the luxury hotel economy has inflated the baseline. For the best value, try the restaurants in Plaka village (4 km north): smaller, family-run, with excellent fresh fish and no tourist infrastructure markup. Kritsa village (10 km southwest of Agios Nikolaos) is worth a half-day trip for its weaving traditions, the Byzantine church of Panagia Kera (14th-century frescoes, one of the finest Byzantine interiors in Crete), and the tavernas around the village square that serve lunch to locals rather than tourists.
Beaches Around Elounda
The bay beaches around Elounda are pebble and rock rather than sand, but the water quality is exceptional. The best swimming and snorkelling is at:
Elounda causeway: Snorkelling over the submerged ruins of Olous. Bring your own mask; the bottom is sandy and rocky with good visibility. Not a beach — enter from the causeway rocks.
Plaka beach: Small pebble beach in the fishing village north of Elounda. Calm, clear water, a taverna above the beach. Good for families.
Agios Nikolaos (12 km south): The town beach at the lake harbour is sandy. The beach at Almyros (2 km west of Agios Nikolaos) is the longest sandy beach in the area — 1 km of sand with shallow water.
Day Trips from Elounda
Spinalonga Island (10 min by boat): The most obvious and justifiable day trip. Full guide.
Agios Nikolaos (12 km): The lakeside town of eastern Crete. The lake connected to the sea, pedestrianised harbourside, Archaeological Museum of Lasithi. Good for an afternoon visit rather than a full day.
Sitia (43 km east): The wine region of eastern Crete. The Toplou Monastery (14th-century, superbly preserved, still active), the Vai palm forest (Europe's largest), and the beaches of the far east coast.
Heraklion and Knossos (70 km): The museums and archaeological sites of central Crete are within day-trip range if you have a car. Knossos guide.
Private Yacht Day Trips from Elounda
The Mirabello Bay is excellent sailing territory: protected from the northerly Meltemi wind, clear water, and easy anchorage in multiple coves. Day trips by private yacht from Elounda or Agios Nikolaos can include Spinalonga, the Mirabello Bay coves, and swimming stops at locations accessible only by boat. The eastern coast of Crete has the calmest sailing conditions on the island in summer. Private yacht day trips from Elounda available here.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Elounda only for luxury hotel guests?
No — Elounda is a functioning town with restaurants, a harbour, and independent accommodation at all price points. The luxury hotels occupy the peninsula; the town itself is accessible to independent travellers. The water, the views, and the proximity to Spinalonga are available to everyone.
How is Elounda different from other parts of Crete?
Quieter than Heraklion or the resort-heavy areas of western Crete. More upscale than most of the island. The natural beauty of the bay is exceptional — the water clarity, the setting, and the Spinalonga backdrop are genuinely remarkable. Less scenically dramatic than the White Mountains or the south coast gorges, but more elegant and more suited to a relaxed high-quality holiday.
When is the best time to visit Elounda?
June and September are ideal: warm water, manageable crowds, the luxury properties at reasonable occupancy. July–August: peak season, maximum prices, but the bay is at its most beautiful. May: the hotels are open but at reduced capacity, prices are lower, and the spring wildflowers on the surrounding hills are exceptional. October: the last reasonable month; water still warm, most hotels still open.
